Job Description

The work of the directorate’s teams includes delivery of major events, designing and leading public affairs or marketing campaigns, providing data, evidence and analysis, leading cross-organisational programmes, to making sure we plan for and can respond to emerging events or emergencies in our city.

 

About the team 

The Digital Communications team, an integral part of the External Relations directorate, is dedicated to strategically amplifying the Mayor’s initiatives, policies, and events to engage and inform London’s diverse and vibrant population. Through the creation of world-class, innovative digital content, the team leverages a dynamic array of platforms including social media, email, digital advertising, and emerging channels, ensuring impactful communication that resonates with Londoners across the capital and beyond.


About the role 

The Digital Content Editor will play a key role in shaping how the Mayor of London and the Greater London Authority communicates with diverse audiences. This role is responsible for creating and editing engaging, audience-focused content across digital channels, translating strategic priorities into impactful messages. By championing best practices in digital content strategy and accessibility, the Digital Content Editor ensures that campaigns are effective, inclusive, and aligned with the GLA's goals.

This position is vital for maintaining the clarity, tone, and effectiveness of the Mayor's digital communications, helping to deliver timely, high-quality content across social media, email, and emerging platforms. The role also contributes to integrated marketing efforts, optimising the use of data and analytics to achieve campaign success. By managing projects, guiding junior staff, and collaborating across teams, the Digital Content Editor ensures that the GLA remains at the forefront of digital communications.


What your day will look like 

Collaborate with the Digital Communications, Marketing Campaigns, and other External Relations teams to provide content planning and copywriting that supports the production of audience-focused digital content, ensuring alignment with GLA strategic goals.
Play a proactive role in the development and delivery of the Mayor of London and the GLA’s digital communications strategies across social media, email, digital advertising, video, photography, and emerging channels, identifying and adopting innovative tools and techniques.
Contribute to the planning and organisation of the Mayor of London and GLA’s digital newsroom, supporting the Senior Digital Communications Strategist and the Paid Media team with content planning, project and campaign management, paid campaign development, and email drafting.
Work with the Marketing Campaigns team to ensure digital channels are effectively integrated into wider marketing activities, advising on and supporting the use of digital communications channels for campaigns.
Proofread, edit, and amend content based on qualitative and quantitative insights and stakeholder feedback, ensuring language is clear, audience-first, and aligned with the correct tone of voice.
Ensure all content adheres to the organisation’s editorial and accessibility guidelines, using plain English and tailoring messages to each channel.
Develop and implement content strategies that celebrate the diversity of London’s communities, ensuring representation, inclusivity, and alignment with the GLA’s Accessible Communications Policy.
Use analytics tools and performance data to monitor, evaluate, and report on the effectiveness of digital communications, providing actionable insights to optimise content and support campaign goals.
Work with colleagues and project owners to ensure appropriate planning and management of copywriting, editing, and proofreading tasks, aligning with project timelines and resource availability.
Line manage the Digital Communications team Intern, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to help them develop professionally.
Build and manage relationships with a cross-section of GLA staff, including the Mayor’s Office, senior staff, policy leads, and external suppliers, to deliver effective digital communications.
Proactively manage workload and resources, escalating potential issues to the Senior Digital Communications Strategist and Head of Digital Communications as needed.
Be prepared to support rapid response communications during crises or urgent events, ensuring timely and accurate dissemination of information.
Promote and enable equality of opportunities, reflecting and championing the diverse needs and aspirations of London’s communities.
Embrace a flexible approach to work, participating in cross-departmental and organisational initiatives and tasks, and understand this role may occasionally involve working outside of usual office hours
