Job Description

Main purpose of the job:  

The University of Exeter is recruiting for its second cohort of Future Leaders and Innovators. This Graduate scheme is designed to enable you to experience a variety of innovative projects across Professional Services, with a focus on Digital and IT. The scheme will provide you opportunities to gain hands-on skills, learn new tools and gain technical experience to become a Future Leader whilst still remaining in a supported environment. 

The Graduate Scheme structure:

Year 1: In year one you will work to support the delivery of 3 projects (4 months in each department) 

Year 2: In year two you will work to support the delivery of 2-3 projects (4-6 months in each department)  

You will work closely with your Graduate Scheme Placement Supervisor who will be your specific point of contact in each placement. You will support and/or lead a project within your given department which may require working with other members of the team as well as colleagues across the University as required to achieve key objectives. 

Main duties and accountabilities: 

Although specific duties & accountabilities will change dependant on the purpose, scope and scale of each project you work in during your various placements, in general you can expect responsibilities to be:  

With assistance and training:  

  • Develop knowledge of each specific Professional Services Divisions and how they work with other related areas of the business. 
  • To be able to work as part of a specialist team and to work positively and successfully with other members of the specific Division as well as other colleagues/teams working at the University. 
  • To be able to proactively identify information you need in order to move forward with a project and source that information from colleagues across the university where appropriate, building and maintaining relationships and ensuring contributions are received to deadlines. 
  • Collate, monitor, analyse and interpret data providing regular written recommendations and summaries to senior stakeholders (Head of Service, Associate Directors, Graduate Scheme Supervisor and if appropriate Directors). 
  • Proactively identify issues and undertake corrective actions as required. 
  • To be able to deal with multiple tasks, to prioritise, adapt and respond appropriately and with the degree of immediacy required in any given situation. 
  • Participate in relevant working groups as required, proactively contributing and reporting progress on agreed actions if your Project is part of a wider Programme. For stand-alone projects or where otherwise appropriate, set up, lead and deliver weekly working groups regularly to continue to drive the project forward. 
  • Ensure project management systems and databases are updated throughout. 
  • Provide administrative and support if needed across the Division as required. 
  • To be an agent of change and co-create the following cohorts Graduate Scheme, proactively offering feedback to Graduate Scheme Manager, keen to innovate and confident in providing critical feedback which will have a strategic impact on future schemes.

All role holders at Grade D are expected to: 

  • Work within a team, and collaboratively within and across teams within the College and Division, proactively identifying improvements and sharing best practice.
  • Liaise with stakeholders across the organisation, proactively building and developing effective communications and working relationships.
  • Support the development of common policies and practice, leading on improvements where delegated.
  • Have responsibility for a project, system, set of procedures, website, event, of a College or Division, or act in an administrative lead capacity.
  • Engage in relevant professional and operational networks across the organisation.
